The news comes courtesy of Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima, who briefly discussed Nintendo’s plans for E3 2017 during the company’s end of fiscal year briefing. There, Kimishima advised that no “large-scale press conference” would be held, which aligns with how the company has dealt with E3 in recent years such as E3 2016’s Nintendo Treehouse event.
“The video game tradeshow E3 will be held in Los Angeles this June. Again this year, we will not be hosting a large-scale press conference for institutional investors, analysts and the media,” stated Kimishima in the briefing. “Nintendo of America will present further information on our plans at a later date.”
This is par for the course when it comes to Nintendo’s E3 presence now. After all, the company has not held a traditional conference at the expo for some time, with the last presentation of that sort coming all the way back in 2012. Nonetheless, many were hoping that E3 2017 could see the company looking to have a more significant physical presence this year, particularly given the stellar early sales figures of the Switch, with 2.74 units sold since launch.
Another reason some gamers had hoped to see an in-person conference from Nintendo is the way in which E3 itself is changing. E3 2017 is the first time that the expo has been open to members of the public, meaning that a traditional conference could have been the chance to wow fans of the company in-person with a large scale presentation.
Nonetheless, Nintendo is still aiming to make a big dent through E3 this year, and has confirmed some of its plans already. For starters, the company is hosting an exhibition tournament for Splatoon 2 at E3 2017, which is bound to go over well with fans of the original game and those who participated in the trial of the sequel. Hopefully, the rest of Nintendo’s plans for the expo will also prove useful.
