The company revealed the news of this Splatoon 2 tournament on its official Twitter page. There, Nintendo confirmed that there would be a pre-release exhibition tournament for the upcoming shooter, complete with a request for those interested in finding out more to wait for further details.
So far, that’s all that Nintendo has let slip about this particular tournament. However, with E3 2017 getting steadily closer, no doubt the publisher will be looking to make its plans better known in the near future. For now, though, players may want to think back to their time with the game’s Global Testfire beta event to think about what strategies could best be implemented.
It’s fair to say that Splatoon 2 is one of the most anticipated games coming to the Switch in the coming months. The original game was a surprise hit for the Wii U, and something of a leftfield option for Nintendo that nonetheless had bundles of quality. With the sequel attempting to improve upon the first game with features such as the new game mode Salmon Run, hopefully Splatoon 2 will make a similar dent on the gaming world.
Of course, Splatoon 2 will be more than just an important game for Nintendo’s new console. As well as this, the title will also be a chance for the publisher to prove its mettle in the multiplayer sphere, as Splatoon 2 could be one of the signs that Nintendo has walked the fine balancing act of subscription-based online services when the Switch service launches this fall. Should multiplayer-focused games such as Splatoon 2 see a significant improvement under the paid-for online service, it could be enough to make gamers feel such a service is a worthwhile investment.
Until then, though, users will have plenty of time to enjoy the game under the free model and see exactly how well Splatoon 2 compares to its predecessor. With the title’s launch date set for July, it won’t be long after Nintendo’s E3 2017 tournament before the game’s retail release is on the cards.
Splatoon 2 will be released on July 21 for the Nintendo Switch.
