Nintendo Switch Sports takes place in SPOCCO Square, a multi-sport facility that houses all the different sports players will be able to participate in. At launch, Nintendo Switch Sports players will be able to play badminton, bowling, chambara, soccer, tennis, and volleyball, with some of the sports having special modes to check out as well. For example, soccer in Nintendo Switch Sports will make use of the leg-strap accessory (available through Ring Fit Adventure or physical copies of Nintendo Switch Sports), while bowling will let players bowl on lanes with obstacles to make things a little more interesting.

The original Wii Sports did not support online play, and Wii Sports Club on the Wii U’s online play left a lot to be desired. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo Switch Sports online multiplayer is more in line with expectations. Along with the standard local multiplayer options, Nintendo Switch Sports will let players play all the sports online, either with friends or against stranger through matchmaking.
The Nintendo Switch Sports gameplay overview trailer also touches on the game’s ranking system and character creation. There was a bit of controversy when it was revealed that Nintendo Switch Sports would have new characters instead of the Miis from Wii Sports, but as it turns out, players still have the option to play as their custom Miis if they’d rather do that instead.
The trailer also kept the focus on Nintendo Switch Sports sports that will be available at launch, but it should be noted that another sport is coming to the game at some point after release. It has already been confirmed that Nintendo Switch Sports is adding golf this fall through a free update.
A Nintendo Switch Sports online play test occurred shortly after the reveal, but Nintendo has not indicated that it has any plans to do another one before launch. Considering this, it seems that fans will just have to wait for the game’s release date to roll around next month to get their hands on the game.
Nintendo Switch Sports launches April 29, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
